The Staffroom Podcast with Chey & Pav Episode 22: Introverted Learners

Podcasts

In Episode 22, Chey and Pav talk about Introverted Learners, and how to accommodate for them appropriately in our classrooms. We all have students with varying learning styles in our rooms, and those with Introverted tendencies tend to experience the most strain. The classroom experience is traditionally set up for Extroverted learners. Introverted learners often get left behind in this situation.

Chey and Pav discuss that Introverted learners have their own character traits and shouldn’t necessarily be trying to strive for extroverted learning traits – sometimes we as teachers unintentionally push all students to try and fit into this box of being extroverted – that this is the ideal personality for success, but that’s not necessarily the case.

We all have students with varying learning styles in our rooms, and those with Introverted tendencies tend to experience the most strain.

The duo talk about some of their experiences, both personal and in the classroom, that have led to them changing up some of their teaching styles and best practices in order to engage in more equitable practice for all kinds of learners in the classroom – starting with the set-up of the physical space, to include more areas in the room to use as reflection zones, so that introverted learners can be comfortable and thrive in their classrooms.

We want to celebrate Introverted learners and how they learn and differentiate our instruction so that even in collaborative settings, they still have the ability to thrive.

The pair introduce their 3 Enlightened Minutes Guest, Dr. Cristobal Sandana, administrator from the Austin area in Texas. Links to his twitter and blog are located below.
