Intelligogy The Podcast Season 2, Episode 4: This Is Our Every Day

It’s me this time.  I vulnerably share my heart with you and take you inside painful truths of the black family in America.  My family in America.

This episode comes on the heels of an explosion of protests and racial tension in response to a death in police custody.  Black men and women have been gunned down by vigilantes, shot and killed in their own homes because officers have the wrong address or thought they were entering their own homes.

But that’s not the purpose of the episode or the article. The purpose is to give you insight into what parents of color have to teach our children.  The conversations we have to have in our homes are different from the conversations you have to have in your homes.

When I make this statement, people still honestly don’t get it…not until I share specific examples.

That’s exactly what I do in this episode, “This Is Our Every Day.”

It’s a painful peek into the reality of being black in America.

It was not easy to share, I worry about how it will be received and perceived, I worry if people will shy away from working with me. I worry will I be viewed as, “Oh, here she goes, too,” I worry about being viewed as radical just for taking a brave step of sharing what it’s like in my family.

No matter the consequences, this is what is on my heart, and the only way we can be a part of change is to change what we are doing.

Here is my change.

To share, to be vulnerable, to take a tremendous risk not knowing the outcome, to trust you with my heart.

Howdy, Edufriends! I am a lover of people and relationships. I’ve been teaching for more than 16 years. My happy places have been reading specialist, instructional coach, mentor, and a 3rd grade and Kindergarten teacher. My classroom is a live learning lab hosting student teachers, teachers who want to learn how to have more engagement in their classrooms, and administrators for other schools often pop in. I am most passionate about igniting the spark in adults and helping children believe in themselves. Perhaps oddly interesting, I have a unique love for animals that includes previously having owned a boa constrictor and having shown pure-bred wolves at wolf shows. I should have said unique love for exotic animals!
